Important Updates:

1. Terry Fox Run and Orange Shirt Day -Sept. 30

The Terry Fox Run will not look the same this year. Instead of walking as a school, we will be walking as a classroom during Physical Education. We have also been supporting the Terry Fox Foundation by recording our walking everyday.  We are trying to walk 163 km (the distance to Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump) over the next two weeks. If we make our goal, Miss Nanavaty will surprise us with a  reward! We are still accepting donations for the foundation.

September 30 is also Orange Shirt Day. Please wear orange to promote awareness about the residential school system and the impact it has had on Indigenous communities.

2. Meet the Teacher

Conferences are September 24 and September 25. If you have not already done so, please book an appointment online. Meetings will occur via Skype or by phone.  I will provide more information on the meeting format soon.

3. Google Classroom

Beginning Monday, September 21, Google Classroom will be available for students who are missing school due to illness. Students will be able to log-in and and complete the same work we are working on in the classroom.

4.  New AM Entry Procedures

Also beginning Monday, September 21, students will be able to enter the school as soon as they arrive in the morning. Students should proceed to the same entry door at the back of the school and a staff member will be there to let them in.

5. New Lunch Times

Beginning Monday, September 21, Grade 4 will be eating lunch from 12:20 -12:40 and then will head outside from 12:40 - 1:10.

Thursday, September 17

 Highlights from Today:

  • In math we have been working on numbers to 10 000. We have created a place value flip chart to learn how numbers can be represented in different ways. Today we used a deck of cards to make different numbers. We then wrote the number in standard form, expanded form, written form, chart form and using base ten blocks.

  • In literacy, we have been working on spelling words with short and long vowel a sounds. We have also completed a see, think, and wonder for a picture that represents Alberta. We also wrote a friendly letter to our friend Fudge (a character from Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing) giving him some suggestions on how to behave better.
  • In Social, we have been learning about the symbols of Alberta. Ask us what we have been learning!

Wednesday, September 2, 2020

Thursday, September 3, 2020

 Highlights from Tuesday and Wednesday

  • Room 177 students spent the last two days learning about new procedures in our classroom and around the school. It would be good to discuss some of the new procedures with your child. If you notice they are concerned about anything, feel free to send me an email at ncgoodall@cbe.ab.ca so that I can revisit the rules and ensure everyone is comfortable.
  • We also spent some time labeling individual school supplies and getting to know each other through reading, writing, and math activities. Everyone wrote a friendly letter to me so that I could learn more about them. I am excited to write back!
Important Reminders:
  • Please ensure your child comes to school with two or more masks each day.
  • Please send you child with a water bottle everyday.
  • Every child will need a pair of indoor running shoes appropriate for physical education activities. As well, please wear outdoor shoes that are suitable for running and playing on the playground.
  • It is important that you arrive on time to school so that we can ensure appropriate social distancing.
  • After school pick-up: We have to remain in our cohorts until all students are outside the school. With the construction behind the school and large number of people picking-up children, it would be advisable to set a very clear meeting spot so that your child knows exactly where to go.
  • Dress for the weather! We will be outside rain or shine!

I am excited to have my entire class together tomorrow!!! See you at 8:07!

Welcome to A New School Year

Welcome to Grade 4!  I can't wait to meet all of you!

A few important reminders are listed below. Please review these with your child:

I will meet you in the soccer field on your first day of school. Last names beginning A-K will attend Tuesday, September 1. Last names L-Z will attend Wednesday, September 2. Everyone will attend Thursday, September 3.

If possible, please wear a mask on your first day of school. I will be waiting for you on the soccer field. When you arrive, please line-up 2 meters apart. Please refrain from using the playground equipment.

My class will meet and depart from the same location on the soccer field everyday. Students will not be permitted to enter or leave through other doors in the school. It is extremely important that students arrive to school on time this year. As well, if you are picking up your child at the end of the day, please be sure to arrive on time.  If you are going to be late, please phone the school ASAP so arrangements can be made to ensure a secure pick-up. If you arrive late in the morning, please proceed to the front entrance where your child will be escorted to their classroom.

Students attending First Class will be escorted outside to meet their class in the morning. After school, they will walk outside with their class and then meet the First Class staff outside. They will not be able to go directly to the gym after school.

If your child is meeting a sibling after school, please arrange a meeting spot outside. They will be dismissed from their class first before they can connect with a sibling.

All students will be eating lunch in their classrooms this year. Please ensure lunch items are sent with your child in the morning, as parents will not be permitted in the school.

Please DRESS FOR THE WEATHER. Students will be meeting outside everyday and it is going to take some time to get all students in and out of the school.

As students enter and exit the school, they will be asked to use hand sanitizer. They will also be sanitizing their hands frequently through-out the day. Students will also be expected to wear a mask through-out the day. If there are reasons your child may not be able to wear a mask. Please contact me ASAP at ncgoodall@cbe.ab.ca.

School will look different this year. But these differences have been put in place to limit the spread of COVID-19. We understand that it may take some time for your child to adjust to these changes. Despite these necessary changes, I am beyond excited to be back at New Brighton and I can't wait to meet your child.

Thank you so much for your cooperation! See you Tuesday or Wednesday!
